Better than his record

Produced and edited by John Silcox
Directed by Richard Down

‘Rockin’ Robin Deakin is dubbed ‘Britain’s worst boxer’ by the national sporting press. In the last decade he has lost 51 professional fights but made a name for himself by being a dependable journeyman – basically a human punch bag for up-and-coming fighters to get some experience against, without risking their precious record. So when he is stripped of his British boxing licence for health reasons, Robin is forced to reconsider his life and career. When did losing become his speciality? It wasn’t always this way, as an amateur Robin had a fantastic record. He was once touted for big things and he even won his first professional bout. After a year out of the ring, this documentary follows Robin on a path of self-discovery as he trains for a boxing match that could set him back on winning ways. With the support of his coaches, friends and father, Robin has to rekindle his self-belief, and overcome the physical and psychological barriers standing in his way. It is the fight of his life: Robin must prove he has what it takes to win in front of the boxing community. But underneath it all, does he truly think he can do it?
